Marco Grob

Marco Grob was born in Olten, Switzerland. He began his photography career as a photo assistant in Los Angeles, but eventually returned to Switzerland to open up his own studio and started photographing still lifes.

In 2003, Marco began to focus on portrait photography. Grobb moved to New York City where he worked with numerous celebrities and musicians like Leonardo DiCaprio, Lady Gaga, Michael Douglas, Justin Bieber, Elton John, and Barack Obama. Rob is well known for his portrait of Steve Jobs that graced the cover to Time magazine.

Grob has worked with Walt Disney, Warner Brothers, MARVEL, NBC Universal, HBO, and A&E and does a lot of movie posters and advertising work. His photographs are very cinematic and he has an excellent handle on studio lighting.

Grob’s portraits have a Steve McCurry-like feel. He uses the studio lighting to bring out the natural texture and contours of the subject’s face. Rob also has said that his biggest influences are, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Robert Mapplethorpe, Philippe Halsman, Yousuf Karsh, Herb Ritts and David Lynch.

Rob has photographed for TIME, GQ, Vogue, Esquire, The New York Times. In 2011, Grobb did a project on the effects of 9/11 on multiple people who were in some way influenced by the event. The photos are all in black and white, which creates a somber mood. Grab created portraits of the individuals who were from all aspects of life. He photographed the political figures involved including Rudy Giuliani, George Bush and David Patraeus. He also included portraits of survivors and family member of those who died in the tragic attack. Grob won an Emmy for his work “Beyond 9/11.”

Other awards he received include an International ADC Gold, Swiss ADC , South African Loerie Awards, Cannes Awards, New York Festival Awards, Picture of the year, Kunstpreis des Kantons Solothurn 2011 and the Hasselblad Master 2007.
